Scientology in the films of Will Smith
Will Smith gave out cards for a complimentary Scientology personality test to crew members on his latest movie, Hancock -- the film's trailer, by the way, is very good. Smith is no stranger to the Scientology rumours -- he's friends with Scientology spokeperson and occasional actor, Tom Cruise, and his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, is reportedly an active member -- but he has often downplayed his connection to the church. Does this mean the I Am Legend star is admitting he's a church member? Perhaps. However, if you study Smith's resume, you can see the subliminal underpinnings of a decade-long pro-Scientology campaign. For instance...

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996) -- His character was forced to move to the West Coast. This is in fact a parable for Xenu forcibly moving all the aliens he kidnapped to Earth (which was then called Teegeeack). And Carlton's trippy Tom Jones dance is actually caused by the body thetans.

Independence Day (1996) -- Smith and his band of survivors save the planet from aliens (read: Xenu) who have invaded Earth. Although the ships the aliens fly don't look anything like the spaceships Xenu apparently used.

Men In Black (1997) -- Again with the aliens. A secret organization (cough, Scientology, cough) protects the Earth from evil aliens.

Enemy of the State (1998) -- Hmmm. Smith starred alongside Jason Lee, who is also a Scientologst.

Men in Black II (2002) -- And he's back. Just like in the first movie, Smith's Agent J gets to use all sorts of cool technology.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) -- How do you get happiness. With Scientology!

David Ajemian:Kooky Priests Always Bring the Lulz
A Boston priest was accused of stalking hometown boy Conan O??Brien this week. Smarty-pants Rev. David Ajemian reportedly sent Conan notes on parish letterhead signed ??your priest stalker.?? Boston, stand up! We??re wicked smart!

The priest also contacted Conan??s parents in suburban Boston and hung around Conan??s studio at New York??s Rockefeller Plaza. He complained in notes to Conan about not being allowed to see a taping of Conan??s ??Late Night?? show.

??Is this the way you treat your most dangerous fans??? the note said.

The letters and e-mails, which started coming in September 2006, continued even after Ajemian was asked to stop and were ??intended to cause annoyance and alarm,?? Thompson said.

??I want a public confession before I ever consider giving you absolution, or a spot on your couch,?? wrote Ajemian, who signed the notes ??Padre,?? Thompson said.

Ajemian also has been in contact with O??Brien??s parents, Thompson said.

A telephone message left Wednesday night at St. Mary-St. Catherine of Siena Church in Boston, which Ajemian gave as his address, was not immediately returned.

O??Brien is not commenting, an NBC spokesman said.

The Boston Archdiocese said in a statement that Ajemian had been placed on leave and was no longer allowed to minister publicly. O??Brien has participated in fundraising activities for the archdiocese.

The priest and the late-night host may have attended Harvard University at the same time. O??Brien graduated in 1985, and Ajemian graduated from high school in 1979 before attending the Ivy League school, according to an alumni magazine published by his high school.

I totally plan on tracking down this David Ajemian dude: I think me and Dave could really chill together.

Aquadots Recall: U.S recalls 4M China-made Aqua Dots toys

U.S recalls 4M China-made Aqua Dots toys
Aquadots, or Aqua Dots as they are sometimes called, have been recalled from all US retailers. The recall is over whether a Chinese subcontractor replaced a glue component with one that mimics the effect of rohypnol, the so called date rape drug. Thus is a child swallows some of the beads that can beomce comatose, as has happened to at least two children.

Aquadots were recalled inAustralia by the original manufacturer, Moose Enterprises, yesterday and now Spin Master is requesting that North America
take the children??s beads of their shelves because of concerns over a chemical reaction if children swallow the pieces. Moose Enterprises were first to recall their version of Aqua Dots, which are known as Bindeez in Australia. Spin Master has now recalled the toys in the United States They say they are ??working diligently to identify any shipments that could potentially be included in a recall by the CPSC and Canadian official.??

It is unclear how many sets are being recalled. The company was first alerted to the danger after tests showed some batches of Aquadots were not made with it??s approved formula. Kids love Aquadots but that's one reason why they're so dangerous:

The wildly popular craft beads known in the U.S. as Aquadots have been huge sellers.

Young Heather Lehane in Australia loved them, until she put them in her mouth.

"The ambulance wasn't that long in coming, but she was in such a state, so un-well. She was pale and just the vomiting and the fitting we just couldn't believe," said Charlotte Lehane, Heather??s Mother.

Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia have been hospitalized for eating Aquadots.

Only then was it discovered why.

When ingested the body metabolizes the toy's adhesive into a compound similar to a date rape drug, potentially triggering seizures, even coma.

And from the Wall Street Journal about Aquadots:

More than four million Chinese-made toys sold in the U.S. as Aqua Dots are being recalled after reports surfaced that children swallowed beads containing a chemical found to mimic the effects of the so-called date-rape drug.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received two reports of children swallowing Aqua Dots and slipping into comas. Both children are now fine, the commission said. At least three children have been hospitalized in Australia, where the product is called Bindeez, after ingesting beads from the toy.

Whether it's an error with hte orginal design or whether it's a problem with hte sub-contractor, no one knows as yet. More to come, no doubt.

Pandemic movie reveiw

Pandemic movie reveiw
his is a made-for-television movie my Mom taped off the Hallmark Channel several months ago and we only just now got around to watching (we often will record movies like this and then wait to watch them until we??re together ?? by the way, Mom, I have a sci-fi disaster one with Dale Midkiff waiting for the next time you come to MY house!).

Anyway, we didn??t have super-high hopes for it ?? deadly virus movies are a dime a dozen, after all, and we??ve seen them all, I??m sure. But, despite its numerous problems (for one, it??s three hours long and really needed to only be two), we found it surprisingly watchable.

The movie opens with a pair of surfers on a beach in Australia, one of whom covers his mouth with his hand to cough, and then uses the same hand to pat his pal on the back and say goodbye. The pal heads to the airport and gets on a plane, where he too begins to cough, sending infected droplets plane-wide. And then he begins to bleed from the mouth. And then he dies. Man, I hate it when that happens.

The CDC is called in to quarantine the passengers on the plane, but, of course, you can??t have a virus movie called Pandemic that??s about a successful quarantine, so instead, one arrogant butthead sneaks out and hails a cab, spreading the germ to the cabbie, who spreads it to his next passenger, who spreads it to, etc. etc. etc.

This storyline alone would??ve been enough to make a relatively solid, if unoriginal, movie, but because they needed to fill that third hour, the writers decided to add in an extra twist: one of the airplane passengers also just so happens to be a Dastardly Villain in federal custody. He and the cop he??s cuffed to both get taken to quarantine, where the cop promptly becomes sick and has to be isolated. Meanwhile, Dastardly Villain??s pals begin working on a plot to bust him out, which we viewers know will mean even more spread of the germ. See above, re: Hate it when that happens.

Despite the fact it had too many superfluous subplots and not enough science, this movie was still what I would describe as ??entertaining enough.?? The mysterious bug is a derivative of H5N1, the infamous ??bird flu,?? so that lent it an air of timely paranoia, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Tiffani Thiessen, who I mostly know as ??Moonface?? (as my sister and I called her) from Beverly Hills 90210. She carries the movie quite well, supported as she is by Faye Dunaway, playing the governor of California, and Eric Roberts as the mayor of Los Angeles. All in all, we were entertained. Enough, anyway.

Hawaii Weather

Hawaii Weather
People are always asking us at The Aloha Insider what the best time to visit Hawaii is. Frankly, we think Hawaii is a great place to visit any time of year! But here are some things to consider:

Although Hawaii's busiest tourist season is during winter (December to February), this has more to do with the weather elsewhere, since many visitors are snowbirds escaping cold winters back home. If cost is a major factor for you, think about visiting in the relative off-season of summer or early fall, since April through mid-December is when hotel prices are at their lowest.

Average temperatures differ very little from winter to summer. June through October is the hottest period, while rainfall is heaviest between December and March -- but neither extreme is worth worrying over. Daily temperatures in Honolulu average a high of 84F (29C) and a low of 70F (22C).

If you're a surfer, you won't want to miss the Christmas-time action around Oahu's North Shore, but if windsurfing or diving is more your thing, you'll find the waters at their calmest in July and August.

New York City Marathon NYC 2007

New York City Marathon NYC 2007
Long Island Chiropractor, Dr. John Gehnrich, practicing in Rockville Centre, reminded me earlier today that the ING New York City Marathon is tomorrow morning (Sunday) beginning in Staten Island, and ending in midtown Manhattan. There are dozens of chiropractors on hand in New York City, participating in this year??s event, and there are cheering zones stationed around mile markers 8, 14, and 22 for those not running the course.

According to a 2007 course map, the marathon begins at the Verazano-Narrows Bridge in Staten Island and the course will pass through Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Carroll Gardens, Clinton Hill, and other parts of Brooklyn, up until about mile 13. Runners will also pass through Long Island City in Queens, crossing the East River along the Queensboro Bridge around mile 16. Athletes will head up through the upper East side of Manhattan and into the Bronx around mile 20, through Harlem around mile 22, and into Central Park for mile 23 through mile 26 and to the finish line.

I love running! I was in San Francisco just couple of weeks ago for the Nike Women??s marathon. I searched two marathon related articles on Planet Chiropractic, one was from 2006 LA Marathon, and the other included some of my thoughts on goal setting and motivational training when running.

I also noticed that the Adidas locations I mentioned for foot orthotic scanning included a store in New York ( 610 Broadway, New York, NY 10012 ) but you may want to head over there during a non-marathon day if you??re going to get scanned for custom shoes. For chiropractic care, there is a growing list page of DCs in New York.

All the best to everyone participating in this year??s 2007 New York City Marathon.

Shay dies during U.S. Olympic marathon trials

Shay dies during U.S. Olympic marathon trials
NEW YORK -- Ryan Shay and Ryan Hall hoped to celebrate together with their wives after the U.S. men's marathon Olympic trials.
Now Hall, the trials champ, faces a future of all he dreamed about and what he never imagined: the glory of the Olympics, the heartbreak of a funeral.
Shay, one of America's top distance runners, collapsed and died not even six miles into Saturday's race. Minutes after Hall crossed the finish line in record time, his arms raised in triumph, he heard the unthinkable news.
Shay was 28. He was one of Hall's former training partners, and his wife was Hall's college teammate at Stanford.
"That just cut me straight to the heart," Hall said. "It makes you forget what you just did."
What was supposed to be a glorious weekend for the sport became instead a wake. And that somber mood is sure to carry over to Sunday's New York City Marathon, in which 38,000 runners will compete.
"It's a big loss for the running community," said 2004 Olympic women's marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor, who used to train with Shay in California. "It's a day we should be celebrating. It has cast a pall."
Organizers had decided to pair the trials with the storied annual marathon, hoping the timing would attract large crowds. The plan worked, as fans fought gusty winds to line the compact 26.2-mile course, which began in Rockefeller Center and traipsed through Times Square before heading to Central Park for five loops.
They witnessed a potentially historic day for American marathon running. Hall, a 25-year-old who had never raced the distance before April, established himself as a contender in Beijing, with a trials record time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 2 seconds. He was followed by Dathan Ritzenhein (2:11:07) and Brian Sell (2:11:40), who will join him in China.
Meb Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, was hobbled by cramps in both calves and fell back to eighth.
But back about 5? miles into the race Shay had collapsed. He was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:46 a.m., according to New York City police.
"He was a tremendous champion who was here today to pursue his dreams," said Craig Masback, CEO of USA Track & Field. "The Olympic trials is traditionally a day of celebration, but we are heartbroken."
No immediate cause of death was announced, and the medical examiner's office said an autopsy will be performed Sunday.
Shay's coach, Joe Vigil, said he wasn't aware of any health problems.
"He was the epitome of athleticism," Vigil said. "I don't know what caused it."
A recreational runner died during last month's Chicago Marathon, the warmest in that event's history. But the death of an elite athlete during a major competition is a rare and startling occurrence.
On Friday, Hall and his wife, Sara, and Shay and his wife, Alicia, went for a run in Central Park. Shay seemed fine, Sara Hall said.
"I've had a few downs -- since 2004, I've had injuries here and there, but I've come back and I've been able to get in the training that I feel I need," he said at a news conference. "This is the best U.S. marathon field we've had in a long time, but I guess that's why you run the race -- to see who has it in the end."
Saturday, Shay hit the ground near the Central Park boathouse, a popular Manhattan tourist spot. New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg, whose organization hosted the event, said Shay received immediate medical attention but would not elaborate on what steps were taken. A statement from USA Track & Field said Shay immediately received CPR.
"He crossed right in front of me and stepped off the course," said runner Marc Jeuland of Chapel Hill, N.C., who did not see Shay collapse. "He nearly tripped me. He would not have been taxed at that point."
Shay was born May 4, 1979, in Ann Arbor, Mich., one of eight children in a running family. His parents are the cross country and track coaches at Michigan's Central Lake High School.
Joe and Susan Shay were not in New York on Saturday, because they had two runners competing in the Michigan cross country state championships, said Central Lake athletic director Quinn Barry.
At Notre Dame, Shay earned the school's first national individual track title with his victory in the NCAA 10,000 meters. There, he often ran with Wittenberg, who was attending law school. Shay went on to become a five-time national road racing champion, winning the 2003 U.S. marathon, 2003 and 2004 half-marathon, 2004 20k and 2005 15k.
He trained in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., with the Halls, Keflezighi and Kastor before moving to Flagstaff, Ariz.
"If you probably asked him if there was any way he wanted to go, it was out on the race course," said Terrence Mahon, who coached him in Mammoth.
Abdi Abdirahman, who dropped out of the marathon because of injury, trained with Shay for the past 3? months in Flagstaff.
"I'm speechless. I still don't believe it," he said. "I probably was the last person to talk to him. We ate breakfast together, we ate lunch together, went to bed at the same time."
The post-race news conference with the three Olympic qualifiers was a surreal experience for Hall. He started to say something about Shay, not realizing the death hadn't been announced, and was cut off by an official. After several questions about the race, a shaken Wittenberg finally interrupted to announce Shay's death.
For Hall, Saturday culminated a reluctant route to the marathon. Neither Hall nor the second-place finisher, 24-year-old Ritzenhein, had run a marathon as of a year ago. Saturday marked the second career race at the distance for both.
Hall broke away from the leading pack of five runners at about the 17th mile Saturday. He looked relaxed and fresh the entire race and was pumping his fist and bellowing over the final miles.
Too soon, those bellows became hushed words of shock and sympathy.
Back in Michigan, the Central Lake athletic director's voice cracked over the phone as he reminisced.
"This is a little town," Barry said. "People really rally around people like Ryan. ... He did things the right way for the right reasons."

Earthquake today:updated
From Los Gatos, California

From the San Jose Mercury News:
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake centered near Alum Rock in San Jose struck at 8:04 tonight.

Well, guess who was sitting at dinner at 8:04 pm and felt, as the song goes, "the earth move under my feet?"

Me. That's who.

When you hear, read, or see a news story about an earthquake you think about Japanese people jumping under tables while tins of shark fin soup come tumbling off the shelves in the background.

I am not that experienced in dealing with earthquakes. Or shark fin soup.

Everyone who grew up on Long Island and has been through an earthquake, raise hands.

No one? What a surprise! Wanna know why? It's because we don't have earthquakes on Long Island.

Gang wars? We got. Mafia activities? Enough to start a new HBO series. Jets and Mets fans? We got by the thousands. Earthquakes? We got none.

A bunch of the staff of the Fred Thompson for President campaign were sitting at dinner when it felt like a subway train (they don't have subways in Los Gatos, I don't think) came rumbling under the restaurant.

The younger, more delicate flowers with whom I was eating sat stock still with their eyes wide.

"Earthquake," I said calmly, being older, wiser, and pretty sure there are no subways in Los Gatos.

According to my mapping program, Los Gatos is about 14 miles from the epicenter of this earthquake which was at Alum Rock, California.

While it was called a "moderate" earthquake by people who were not in it, I am here to tell you that the chandelier over our heads did not stop swinging for a good 5 - 6 seconds after the rumbling stopped. My glass of Pinot Noir didn't stop sloshing around for another 2.3 to 2.5 seconds.

The reality is: I didn't see any cattle heading for shelter, nor any household pets running under the living room furniture just before I took a bite of my pasta and shrimp entrée.

No bridges collapsed, no houses fell down, and no freeways pancaked.

It was, actually, pretty cool, but it did remind me that it was one more reason why I have no desire to live in California.

New Topic

The Democrats had another in the never-ending series of debates last night, this time hosted by MSNBC at Drexel University in Philadelphia which, when we were kids, we called "Dreck Tech" although I don't now remember why we thought that was funny.

Barak Obama (averaging just under 22% in the Real Clear Politics polling index) and John Edwards (about 13% in the RCP index) took out after Hillary Clinton (46% in the index) but it may be after 11 months of campaigning attacks on Hillary have the same effect on voters as a tree falling in a forest where no one ever goes.

If either Edwards or Obama had any credibility left, they would be challenging Clinton for answers like this one on a recent vote on Iran:

"In my view, rushing to war we should not be doing that but we shouldn't be doing nothing. And that means we should not let them acquire nuclear weapons, and the best way to prevent that is a full court press on the diplomatic front."

Uh. Yeah. What she said.

SIDEBAR
When the cable affiliates of NBC hosted the Republican debate in Dearborn, Michigan a month ago they ran Chris Matthews in to do the questioning. Last night, the Dems got Tim Russert.

You think there's no bias?

END SIDEBAR

Hillary is very close to building an insurmountable lead on the Democratic side, which is good news to Republicans. As Sen. Chris Dodd pointed out during the debate, "Fifty percent of the American public say they're not going to vote for her."

Watch for the Democratic primary to get very nasty, very quickly.

Obama, Edwards, Richardson and the rest are running out of time to stop Hillary Clinton from getting the nomination. They can't afford to talk about themselves; they have to talk about her and when they do, they will have to say appalling things about her.

Seismic, almost.

Earthquake watch: Bay Area Earthquake
Like most people tonight, I was huddled in my most comfy chair watching the tube when the earthquake hit.

It was just a swell coming up through the chair, shimmying the house and getting the dining room light fixture swinging. My husband and I, both California natives, looked at each other without even a flinch.

??Earthquake,?? he says.

Maybe I should check the news.

All but KRON-Channel 4 made do with a quick on-air recognition that, indeed, an earthquake had just happened. KRON stayed on the air, although you might wonder why when all the station did was repeat the information we had already: 5.6, centered in Alum Rock.

Seriously, how many people do you want to hear telling about how they were sitting there and then?well, you read the top of this so you know what everyone said.

If you popped over to the Web sites, you got more information. Well, not from KRON-Channel 4, but I??ve got to applaud both KPIX-Channel 5 and KGO-Channel 7 for their preparedness. They had maps, reports, guides to weathering an earthquake and then they even had a video you could watch of the station breaking the story on air.

Sure, Ken Bastida thought Tony Russomano was Len Ramirez at first, but it was a minor bobble. And I could never get the live Web cam to work. But I scored this Web site as the easiest to use.

Over at KGO, we clicked on Dan Ashley breaking the news. While Ken stayed on for almost eight minutes, Dan made do with about 2.35.

KTVU-Channel 2, which has a really cluttered Web page that isn??t easily navigated under the best of circumstances, had an AP story but no video posted at first. Later, there was a video with Julie Haener. But you had to sit through a stupid car commerical with some guy getting a tattoo removed before you could watch it.

San Jose-based KNTV-Channel 11, where the quake was centered, lacked the breaking news video on the page. Even worse, they had a video from an earlier quake that confused me until I realized they were talking about ANOTHER earthquake.

Sure, this was just a moderate earthquake, but in the case of a real earthquake, we??d like to know the best place to go on the Web for info.

10 Reasons why we are the choice when it comes to best spray bed liner in Alum Rock

Do not haul heavy loads (light hauling OK) for 24 hours after getting your new bedliner.

Clean your bedliner with plain soap, water, and a bristle brush. High pressure water washing is also OK.

Apply Just Once 3-4 times per year.

NEVER use paste wax on your bedliner (it will leave a stain).

Car wash spray waxes are OK and will not harm your liner.

Although your liner will not rust, rust will stain the liner. Always clean the liner after hauling rusty items.

Licensed Alum Rock Sprayer Technicians - The uniform, fine grain textured appearance of our liners depends on sprayer technique and skills. That??s why we lead our technicians through a brutal 6-12 months of training. And ONLY those that make it through our training AND testing become Certified Sprayers. This is crucial when it comes to best spray bed liner

Proprietary 9 Step Taping System ?? The laser straight, ultra sharp bedliner lines we are known for are created in the very first step we take to prepare a truck for spraying. We use special materials, techniques, and training for our Prep Technicians to create these results.

Triple Cleaning Procedure ?? Before we spray we air wash carefully, wipe with alcohol (using a rag folding technique), and air wash again, every square inch of truck bed. This is to make sure it??s 100% debris free. That way you??ll never have a delamination problem.

High Volume Exhaust Spray Area ?? The critical steps of bed cleaning and spraying are done in an enclosed area at our shop near Alum Rock equipped with a high volume air filtered exhaust system. This ensures a particulate free spray environment, and therefore no delamination problems later. This is critical as it applies to best spray bed liner

Fine Texture Spray Techniques ?? We??ve developed a special proprietary spraying method unique to the industry that gives our beds a very uniform, fine grain textured appearance. Our Alum Rock Certified Sprayers must complete 6-12 months of training and testing in this method.

Quality Assurance Program ?? As part of our Quality Assurance Program, we measure and record the exact amount of material sprayed into the bed of every truck we do. These records help us validate warranty claims, and keep and eye on the performance of our Certified Sprayers.

13 Point After Job Inspection ?? After every job, before the bedliner is dispatched, we perform a 13 point quality inspection checking for everything from tape marks and overspray, to surface imperfections and re-attachment of all hardware. Any issues are immediately corrected.

FREE Maintenance Supplies ?? Keeping your bedliner looking smashing and resistant to UV damage involves some upkeep. You should use a protectant to the bed 3-4 times per year. To make this really simple, we??ll give you a FREE lifetime supply of Just Once protectant (terms and conditions apply.).

Lifetime Warranty ?? Your Alum Rock bedliner is guaranteed against flaws in workmanship and material for as long as you own your truck. This warranty is honored at any Spray-On Bedliner location. Every customer is given a Certificate of Warranty.

Earthquake ALERT - San Francisco

No, I'm Not Your SF Bay Area Earthquake Expert

Wouldn't you know it? Just yesterday, I was joking with my wife that the one thing about California I'm missing by being in Colorado this week was the potential for an earthquake. Seriously. It always seems the "interesting" earthquakes take place when we're out of town, so the next time we're traveling, we'll be sure to warn you, as this evening the Bay Area was hit with a 5.6 magnitude event, the strongest in nearly 20 years.

How do you think I found about it? I certainly didn't feel it here in Denver. And nobody called to see if we were okay, as anybody who would care already knew we weren't in the danger zone.

I found out because while thumbing through the referrals to my blog on the Blackberry during some downtime, an odd string of searches from Google started popping up: "recent earthquake in silicon valley", "earthquake hits bay area", "was it an earthquake tonight in sf bay area?" and "sf earthquake tonight" for starters...

That of course got me curious. First, it turns out a note from early March (Yet Another Small Earthquake Hits SF Bay Area) is #2 worldwide in Google for "recent earthquake in Silicon Valley" and #1 for "was it an earthquake tonight in sf bay area?". People from around the Web were looking for answers, hoping I could help.

A few clicks later, and I too was finding out the news. I've talked about earthquakes before on the blog, in December 2006 and June 2006, and I actually see them as a unique bit of California, something to be respected but not feared.

We don't get home until late Monday night, but we don't expect anything to be different. The flat-screen TV better be right where we left it, and the house better be in the same level of disarray we saw when we closed the door Sunday. And maybe the next time there's a good-sized earthquake, I'd like to not find out about it from my Web log statistics.

Bay Area Earthquake:Updated

Magnitude 5.6 - SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, CALIFORNIA

Posted: 31 Oct 2007 12:11 AM PDT

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: An earthquake occurred 105 km (65 miles) WNW of Queenstown, New Zealand and 710 km (440 miles) SW of WELLINGTON, New Zealand at 6:29 AM MDT, Oct 15, 2007 (Oct 16 at 1:29 AM local time in New Zealand). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.

Tectonic Summary

New Zealand straddles the plate boundary between the Australian and Pacific plates in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Along the length of New Zealands islands, this plate boundary consists of a transform fault system (the Alpine Fault) connecting two subduction zones of opposing convergence that lie to the north and south of the South Island, respectively. At the southern tip of New Zealand in a region known as Fiordland, the Australian Plate moves northeast with respect to the Pacific Plate at approximately 37 mm/year. Here, plate motion is accommodated via the subduction of a segment of the Australian plate beneath New Zealand (Pacific plate). Earthquake locations indicate that this subducted plate is highly deformed, and steeply dipping beneath Fiordland. Further to the north, this plate boundary transitions to strike-slip faulting along the Alpine Fault transform system.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the South Island of New Zealand on October 15, 2007 occurred on or close to the Australian:Pacific subduction plate boundary, and either indicates subduction related thrusting towards the east on this interface, or thrusting on a more steeply-dipping, westward oriented structure. Slip vectors for this earthquake, which indicate the direction of motion along the ruptured fault, do not align with plate motions and thus indicate a complicated tectonic setting for this event. The exact nature of how plate motions are accommodated at this plate boundary is not clearly understood, and is presently being debated by the scientific community.

The October 15th event is approximately 50 km northeast of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake of August 2003, which indicated similarly complicated tectonics. Over the past two decades, this region has witnessed several large earthquakes, including the M7.2 event in 2003, a M7.0 event in August of 1993, and several other M6+ earthquakes.

Tropical storm noel is comming

Tropical Storm Noel Heads Towards Cuba
Let's face it: when you're a conservative, and they name a tropical storm after you that's heading towards Cuba, it's almost a moral imperative you share the news with your friends.

With that in mind, as reported by AccuWeather (video available here):

At 11 p.m. EDT Tropical Storm Noel was located near 17.1 north and 72.1 west or about 105 miles south of Port Au Prince, Haiti. Sustained winds are 60 mph with higher gusts and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles. Tropical Storm Noel is moving to the north-northwest at 5 mph. The minimum central pressure is estimated at 996 millibars, or 29.41 inches of mercury.

A tropical storm warning is recommended for the southern coast of Dominican Republic from Barahona westward. Tropical storm warning is in effect for the entire coast of Haiti. Tropical storm warning and hurricane watch is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Granma, Santiago De Cuba, Guantanamo, and Holguin. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Jamaica.

Tropical Storm Noel is expected to slowly strengthen over the next 12-24 hours as wind shear continues to weaken across the region, but interaction with Haiti could counteract the development into early Monday. Latest satellite images show that most of the thunderstorm activity is firing near and to the east of the center of circulation. This storm is expected to continue on a northwest track across western Haiti later Sunday night or Monday morning and perhaps across eastern Cuba Monday night or early Tuesday. It may affect the central and northern Bahamas Wednesday and Thursday then get picked up by an upper-level trough moving across the eastern United States later in the week, steering it away from Florida, but it could get within 100 miles of southeast Florida. In the meantime, a strong pressure gradient between high pressure over the mid-Atlantic states and Noel is causing a strong onshore flow into eastern Florida and this will persist over the next several days leading to rough surf and coastal flooding. Further strengthening of Noel is anticipated Monday and this system may become a hurricane by the time it reaches the coast of Cuba. Regardless of the strength, this system will produce very heavy rain over Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and eastern Cuba the next couple of days which will lead to deadly mudslides in the mountains and flooding. In fact, flooding across Hispaniola could be catastrophic over the next 24 hours. Interests in the Bahamas and South Florida, including the Florida Keys, as well as the southeast U.S. coast should monitor the progress of this system.

All kidding aside, I hope Noel never makes landfall, and only causes political damage to those metaphorically in its path.

Hunter Rick Jacobs claims Bigfoot photo

Hunter Rick Jacobs claims Bigfoot photo

Rick Jacobs, a hunter from Pennsylvania, claims that he has taken a picture of Bigfoot. The animal on the picture certainly does not look like a bear. The photo of Bigfoot by Rick Jacobs was posted on the website of the Bigfoot Research Organization (yes, there is one) and according to one of the members of the organization, the photo appears to be one of a juvenile Sasquatch.

Rick Jacobs took the picture in the Allegheny National Forest by using a camera with an automatic trigger, although the exact location where in the Forest the pics were taken is being kept secret to avoid the thousands of Bigfoot fans, who would show up in search of the mystical creature. The Pennsylvania Game Commission says that they often see picture like this and it seems to be a bear with a severe case of skin disease. An online sportsbook once offered odds on the existence of Sasquatch, but the prop was canceled due to lack of interest. Now with Jacob's Bigfoot, we may see those weird odds pop up again.

Bigfoot research organization
But a hunter in Pennsylvania thinks that??s what his camera (with an automatic trigger) caught a picture of in Allegheny National Forest. He says he??s never seen anything like it, so he took the photo to the Bigfoot Research Organization (BRO, not to be confused with the less-popular and -respected Bigfoot Organization - ??BO??) for their opinion. Of course, they think it??s Bigfoot!

??It appears to be a primate-like animal. In my opinion, it appears to be a juvenile Sasquatch,?? said Paul Majeta of the bigfoot group.

Awesome! Finally, some evidence the big hairy guy exists!

But, alas, there are skeptics:

However, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has a more conventional opinion. Agency spokesman Jerry Feaser said conservation officers routinely trap bears to be tagged and often see animals that look like the photos.

??There is no question it is a bear with a severe case of mange,?? Feaser told The Bradford Era.

Clearrly, a government conspiracy to keep the truth from the masses?

POSTGAME: Notable World Series accomplishments, from MLB
WORLD SERIES NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

ROOKIES ABOUND: Boston started a pair of rookies in Game One ?? DUSTIN PEDROIA and JACOBY ELLSBURY ?? the first World Series team since the New York Mets in 2000 (Timo Perez and Jay Payton) to start two rookie position players in Game One of a World Series. Colorado??s TROY TULOWITZKI became the fifth rookie shortstop to start a World Series game since 1969, joining DAVE CONCEPCION (1970), WALT WEISS (1988), KEVIN STOCKER (1993) and DEREK JETER (1996).

DUSTIN PEDROIA: Became the second player to lead off the first game of the World Series with a home run, joining DON BUFORD, who homered for Baltimore in Game One of the 1969 World Series against the Mets (October 11). In addition, Pedroia became the first rookie to hit a leadoff home run to start any World Series game.

JOSH BECKETT:
? Beckett??s four consecutive strikeouts to begin Game One were the third most ever to start a World Series game, behind SANDY KOUFAX (LA, Oct. 2, 1963 vs. NYY) and MORT COOPER (STL, Oct. 11, 1943 vs. NYY), who both had six straight strikeouts to begin a World Series game.
? Became the 19th pitcher to start a World Series game in both leagues, as he previously opened for Florida in 2003. He is the first to do so since ROGER CLEMENS and ANDY PETTITTE for Houston in 2005 after starting for New York (AL) on multiple occasions.
? Recorded his fourth victory of the postseason in Game One, becoming the ninth pitcher to win four games in one postseason as a starting pitcher. Beckett joins BURT HOOTON (1981), DAVE STEWART (1989), JACK MORRIS (1991), OREL HERSHISER (1995), JOHN SMOLTZ (1996), DAVID WELLS (1998), RANDY JOHNSON (2001) and CURT SCHILLING (2001). No pitcher has ever won five games as a starter in a single postseason.

UBALDO JIMENEZ: With his Game Two start for Colorado, he became the fifth pitcher ever to start a World Series game with fewer than 90 regular season innings of major league experience, the first since MARTY BYSTROM made a Game Five start for the Phillies in 1980.

MATT HOLLIDAY collected four hits in Game Two, the 57th time in World Series history a player has collected four or more hits in a game.

CURT SCHILLING: With his Game Two victory, he became just the second pitcher over 40 (40 years, 11 months, 11 days) to start and win a World Series game, joining KENNY ROGERS, who started and won Game Two of 2006 Series against St. Louis at 41 yrs, 11 mos, 12 days. He is the fourth pitcher overall over 40 to win a World Series game, with two winning in relief: DOLF LUQUE, 43 years, 2 months, 3 days when he defeated Washington in relief for the Giants in the 5th and deciding game of the 1933 World Series on October 7, and JOHN FRANCO, 40 years, one month, 7 days when he defeated the Yankees in relief with the Mets on October 24, 2000, Game 3.

1-2 PUNCH: JOSH BECKETT and CURT SCHILLING combined to go 7-0 this postseason, the first time a pair of teammates have gone 7-0 in a single postseason since DAVE STEWART (4-0) and MIKE MOORE (3-0) guided the 1989 Oakland A??s to a world title?Information courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau.

ROOKIE TANDEMS: JACOBY ELLSBURY and DUSTIN PEDROIA started Game Three in the top two spots of the Red Sox order. They became the first set of rookies in World Series history to hit 1-2 in a lineup. The last rookies to hit back-to-back in a lineup were TIMO PEREZ (batting 7th) and JAY PAYTON (batting 8th) in Game Five for the 2000 New York Mets. ELLSBURY and PEDROIA also became the first pair of rookies in World Series history to each collect at least three hits in the same Fall Classic game with their Game Three performances.

ROOKIE LEAD-OFF MAN: Ellsbury was the first rookie to hit lead off for a World Series game since TIMO PEREZ led off for the Mets in Game Four of the 2000 World Series, October 25, against the Yankees.

DOUBLE MAN: JACOBY ELLSBURY hit two doubles in the third inning of Game Three, becoming the second player in World Series history to collect two doubles in an inning. He joined MATT WILLIAMS (Ari.), Nov. 3, 2001 (3rd inning) as the only player to accomplish the feat. With four hits in the game, Ellsbury became the first rookie to record a multi-hit game since Chicago??s TADAHITO IGUCHI on Oct. 25, 2005 against Houston (Game 3). It was the third time a rookie had four hits in a game in World Series play, joining FRED LINDSTROM (1924 Game Five for New York Giants) and JOE GARAGIOLA (1946 Game Four for St. Louis). Ellsbury totaled three doubles, tied for second most ever in a World Series game, behind FRANK ISBELL (CWS), October 13, 1906.

DAISUKE WITH THE BAT: In Game Three, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA became the first pitcher to record a hit in a World Series game since JEFF SUPPAN (STL) recorded a hit in Game Three of the 2004 World Series (10/26/04). He??s the first Red Sox pitcher to get a hit in World Series play since BILL LEE in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series.

MANY RUNS: With 25 runs over the first three games of the series, the Red Sox have matched the second-highest total for runs scored in the first three games of a World Series. In 1911, Philadelphia scored 25 runs in three games, while the 1960 Yankees scored 30 runs, most ever in three games.

BOBBY KIELTY became the 32nd player in World Series history to homer in his first World Series at-bat, when he led off the 8th inning with a pinch-hit home run on the first pitch to lead off the 8th inning off BRIAN FUENTES. He is the 21st player in World Series history to hit a pinch-hit home run. In both cases, he is the first since Chicago??s GEOFF BLUM hit a game-winning 14th inning home run in Game Three of the 2005 World Series at Houston (Oct. 25).

WINNING STARTERS: Red Sox starting pitchers recorded the win in each of the four games of this series, just the 2nd time in World Series history four starting pitchers won the first four games for a winning team, joining the 1927 Yankees staff of WAITE HOYT (Gm. 1), GEORGE PIPGRAS (Gm. 2), HERB PENNOCK (Gm. 3) and WILCY MOORE (Gm. 4).

MIKE LOWELL: Lowell is the eighth third baseman in World Series history to win the MVP Award, the first since Anaheim??s TROY GLAUS in 2002, the most represented position with the MVP. Lowell is the second Boston MVP in history, joining MANNY RAMIREZ in 2004. The Red Sox World Series championship roster features four World Series MVPs: Lowell (2007), Ramirez (2004), JOSH BECKETT (2003) and CURT SCHILLING (2001).

TERRY FRANCONA becomes the 19th manager to win 2 World Series, the second consecutive year a manager has won his 2nd, joining TONY LaRUSSA with St. Louis (2006). Francona is the 11th manager to win his 1st two World Series appearances. Francona joins BILL CARRIGAN (1915 and 1916) as the only managers to win multiple World Series for the Red Sox.

Putin Strikes with a Blade

Posted: 29 Oct 2007 04:29 AM PDT

I add this page to MY bookmarks AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonPutin Strikes with a Blade

Putin Strikes with a Blade
President Vladimir Putin on Thursday compared his counterparts in the upcoming Russia-EU summit to a mad man who runs around Europe with a blade in his hands. Kommersant??s special correspondent Andrey Kolesnikov tried to keep a cool head in the situation.
Vladimir Putin was greeted in Portugal with a touching welcoming ceremony. The square opposite the Jeronimos Monastery was lined with a record number of horses, which are known to be Mr. Putin??s great love, as well as guardsmen who also attracted his attention though he tried to hide the interest.

The Russian leader's motorcade went from the square to the presidential palace not with a speed of horses but of pedestrians as the cars would stop now and again to let people cross the road, which was ensured by an escort of Portuguese motorcyclists.

Mr. Putin held quick talks with the Portuguese president in the presidential palace, made a joint statement for the press and answered two questions. His answer to the second question has rocked what seemed to be as a senseless course of his working visit in Portugal.

The Russian president's disarming honesty was provoked by a Portuguese journalist who asked if Mr. Putin agrees that relations between Russia and the EU are in their lowest points since the Cold War.

??I do not think relations with Europe are in a regrettable shape,?? the Russian president said. ??There are simply issues on which we disagree. When we discussion things with our European Commission partners, I sometimes get an impression we defend European interests stronger than they.??

So, Vladimir Putin was apparently thinking of himself in that moment of being holier than the Pope.

??Take the Kosovo issue. Don??t you have enough problems in Spain or potential problems in Romania? Or Belgium??? he said.

Portuguese reporters were exchanging uneasy looks. They probably had no idea that Spain or Belgium has any problems.

??Why keep rocking the foundations of the international law, encourage and develop separatism in Europe and the ex-Soviet space??? Vladimir Putin asked.

The Portuguese president was nodding in agreement as he was listening to his Russian counterpart. He gave a nod even after that statement with a surprising willingness. I also noticed that he was nodding when Vladimir Putin was speaking in Russia and stopped nodding when he listened to the translation.

??Or Iran,?? the Russian president continued. ??We are strongly against violating norms of the international law which binds to observe the non-proliferation regime. I reiterated this thought during my visit to Iran? Why worsen the situation and bring it to a dead end by threatening sanctions or military action? Not long ago it didn??t seem possible to resolve the situation with North Korea peacefully? I think running around like a mad man with a blade in one??s hand is not the best way to solve such problems.??

The answer was more than irrefragable. Wires reporters seemed to be the people who were most pleased about it. They double-checked with each other if they go the word ??blade?? right, and once they got the confirmation, they rushed to report these words. They were radiating calm and confidence in tomorrow as they knew that the Russia-EU summit would start that day with an issue as risky as a blade.
